The Tigers missed their chance to move into a tie for first place in the AL Central yesterday. The Tigers won the series but were unable to complete the sweep.

With the 6-0 loss to Cleveland, Detroit slips into third and sit two games back. It’s still relatively early in the season but given the injuries that the Tigers have had to deal with and the fact that this is supposed to be a rebuilding year, sitting two games out of first is a tremendous place to be in.

Pitcher Ryan Carpenter had a rough outing. In five innings, he was blitzed for five earned runs on seven hits.

The Tigers bats never really got going yesterday, connecting for just five hits off of Trevor Bauer. Bauer struck out ten over eight innings, and Cody Allen struck out the side in the ninth to end the game. With this win, Bauer continues to prove that he is “the most scientific pitcher in the game.”

Notes:

JaCoby Jones left yesterday’s game with a hip contusion and his status for tonight is unknown as of this writing.

Miguel Cabrera caused a stir by announcing that he’s done playing through injuries. His words came off a little harsh, but he’s earned the right to rest and heal up if he feels like that’s the best choice.

Quotes :

“Nobody appreciates you when you play hurt, so I’m going to take my time and play when I’m good. I played hurt a lot of years here in Detroit. They don’t appreciate that.”
– Miguel Cabrera

“I didn’t execute some pitches. The second and third innings were a good answer to the two-run first, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to continue that in the fourth and fifth”.
– Ryan Carpenter post game.
