WWE NXT Review 8/15/18

Street Profits vs. The Mighty

After the announcement that the NXT Championship match at Takeover will now be a Last Man Standing Match between former teammates and best friends, Ciampa and Gargano, the show kicks off with a tag team match between two of the more entertaining teams on the roster. Neither of these teams is competing for the championship on Saturday, but I don’t think anybody would be surprised to see either duo at the next Takeover. The crowd was kind of dead for this one, possibly because it took place at the end of a long taping session, but I thought it was a solid if unspectacular match. The Street Profits ended up escaping this one by pulling some tights, and they held their signature black cups high as they left to cheers from the crowd.

Kairi Sane vs. Aliyah

Earlier in the show, a clip was shown of Shayna Baszler giving some tips to Aliyah, presumably to help her defeat her opponent. Before the match even started, the Queen of Spades entered and made her way over to the commentary table.

Once the bell rings, Sane dominates her lesser opponent. Looking to make a point to Baszler, Sane goes for three consecutive In-Sane Elbows but doesn’t go for the pin. She eventually makes Aliyah tap with a vicious submission while she looks straight at a concerned-looking Baszler. This match on Saturday should be great; I’m looking for Sane to win it so Baszler can debut on the main roster.

Velveteen Dream and EC3

Velveteen Dream enters and starts cutting a promo against EC3. It doesn’t take long for EC3 to come out and defend his honor. The Takeover opponents quickly start brawling, but ultimately EC3 comes out on top. This was nothing more than a quick segment to get a feud featuring two of the best wrestlers in NXT on the last show before the PPV

Tyler Bate vs. Roderick Strong

The Messiah of the Backbreaker takes on Tyler Bate in a partial preview of the upcoming NXT Tag Team Title match. Tyler Bate starts out hot in this one, attacking Roderick Strong immediately after the match begins. This match has a lot of high-impact spots from both wrestlers and is easily the best match on the show. Bate is especially impressive, but Strong seems to pull out all the stops as well. Bate eventually ends the match with the TylerDriver 97 to head into Takeover looking strong.

I love Mustache Mountain, but I fully expect The Undisputed Era to continue on Saturday. They just have too much going for them right now, and it feels like they will continue to dominate the tag team division until management decides its time to bring them up to the main roster.
