With free agency fast approaching, can the Wings make some moves to open up cap space to sign a free agent? The Wings are in desperate need of a defenseman, do they have what it takes to sign a decent defenseman? Who is available?

The Wings have to make a move for a decent defenseman. They could go after Trevor Daley, who is set to become a free agent on July 1st. Daley just won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He’s a veteran defenseman that’s been in the league for 13 seasons. Daley would be a good leader for the young defenseman. He can protect the blue line  well. Daley currently has a salary of $2.7 million and a cap hit of $3.3 million, he wouldn’t cost much to sign.

The Wings could also go after a forward. They could sign Thomas Vanek, who they traded last season to the Florida Panthers. Vanek is set to become a free agent July 1st, with a cap hit of $2.6 million and a NHL salary of $2.6 million. He was a huge offensive presence last season for the Wings. He could do the same this season.

Either one of these two free agents would be good for the Wings to go after. Both are veterans, will bring the veteran presence. Will be leaders for the younger players to look up to and help develop them. Wings can pull off getting both if they can move someone and free up some cap space.
