A little bit of Florida rain is hanging over the top of Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, but should be drifting out of the area a little after the 1 o’clock hour.
Detroit’s 27-year-old left-hander Matthew Boyd gets the nod against Washington’s club this afternoon. This spring, in three games, Boyd carries an ERA of 5.63 along with a WHIP of 1.25 and has struck out eight batters through a total of eight innings of work.
A familiar face in Edwin Jackson goes for the Nationals this afternoon. Although its been nine years since chucking his way to the 2009 All-Star Game as a member of the Tigers, Jackson is just 34-years-old. The well traveled veteran has pitched in three games, totaling six innings of work, displaying an ERA of 3.00, a WHIP of 1.00 while striking out six batters so far this spring.
Motown’s four-five punch that is written down on today’s lineup card has been lethal in Grapefruit League play. Nicholas Castellanos and Victor Martinez have been tearing the cover off the ball, making pitchers wish they had other plans.
For Castellanos, in 27 at-bats, he’s carrying a .333 BA along with an OPS of 1.231. Detroit’s right fielder has mashed four home runs and has driven in nine runs to this point in spring training. For Martinez, in 29 at-bats, he’s hitting at a .241 clip with an OPS of .945. The designated hitter has also clubbed four home runs and has driven in six of his teammates.
Although the average isn’t all that high, especially for his standards, four long balls in 29 at-bats isn’t too shabby, spring training or not. Could Martinez be on a power resurgence? For the sake of the Tigers and their fans — hopefully.
