The Red Wings travel out West to California to get set to play the San Jose Sharks in a late game tonight. Both teams have been mediocre up to this point, and haven’t played as they’ve needed to. Detroit is trying to contend for a playoff spot, and San Jose is trying to gain hometown advantage for their playoff berth, and neither is playing to the caliber they need to. The Sharks have gone 5-4-1 in their last ten games, despite the recent edition of Evander Kane as well as all of their high-octane scorers. The Wings have gone 2-6-2 in their last ten games and ultimately have lost all hope at a playoff berth. The Wings still have 14 games remaining in the season, which leaves time for them to make one final push, but they need a lot to happen for them even to have a chance at grabbing the second wild-card spot. Two points are much needed for Detroit in this game. This team still proudly stands by their famous Journey moniker, as they’re living on a prayer.

Between the Pipes

Jimmy Howard is the projected starter tonight. Jared Coreau played in net in Detroit’s last game against Columbus last Friday. He played somewhat better in that game but ultimately dropped the contest 3-2. Howard got some much-needed rest, after starting in the last eight of the Wings last ten games, but he should be ready to suit up against San Jose. The Wings can honestly afford to give Howard a little bit of an extended break, because their playoff hopes are diminishing, but there’s still no quit in this team, and they will still try to steal that last wild card spot if they can. Expect Howard to suit up tonight.

Keys to the Game

The Wings offense must overpower the Sharks in this game. The offense has been completely irrelevant, with top scorers Dylan Larkin, Henrik Zetterberg, and Anthony Mantha racking up minimal points over the past few games. Detroit needs to get these players going to make any kind of impact. Goalie play and defense have been subpar, and if the saying is true, offense is the best defense. All that should be on the Wing’s mind tonight should be score, score, score. The defense also needs to step up and help the goalies out. Jared Coreau is struggling big time, and most of that is because of the defense. Jimmy Howard often shows off a great performance, but the defense doesn’t help him out, and the Wings suffer from that. Overall improvement is needed on all sides of the puck in these crucial couple of weeks.
