Officially The Lions Head Coach

On February 5th, the Detroit Lions announced that they had hired Matt Patricia as their head coach, the 27th head coach in their franchise history.

He brings a wealth of experience, especially on the defensive side of the ball. He also has three Super Bowl rings, someone who has coached and won big time games which is huge for a franchise that is seeking to get over the hump. Patricia is expected to be formally introduced on Wednesday at 3 pm

Official Coaching Staff

As for his coaching staff, that is starting to take shape starting with the offensive side of the ball. He has decided to keep Jim Bob Cooter as the offensive coordinator, let QB coach Brian Callahan go and fired OL coach Ron Prince. He has hired Jeff Davidson as OL coach and George Godsey as QB coach. Davidson’s resume as OL coach is impressive because the run game had improved yearly under him while Godsey was the Texans QB coach when Houston made the playoffs in 2016. On the defensive side of the ball, he has informed Alan Williams, Kris Kocurek, Tony Oden and Bill Sheridan that they will not be part of the staff for next season. He has hired Brian Stewart from Rice as the defensive backs coach and Paul Pasqualoni from Boston College for an unknown defensive staff position, although there are rumors that Pasqualoni could be the next defensive coordinator which is not confirmed. Another assistant coach that he has not decided to let go is special teams coach, Joe Marciano.

Once Patricia is officially introduced, there will be more staff hires to follow. It will be interesting to see who Patricia will hire next because two of the hires (Davidson and Pasqualoni) have a connection to Patricia so this is a theme to keep an eye on.

Last Thoughts

Despite the poor performance that the Patriots defense put up against the Eagles in the SB, I believe that Patricia is the right guy for the job. He specializes in defense and has three SB rings for a reason. Under Patricia, the defense has been in the top 10 in scoring defense and presents different looks to throw off opposing offenses. The NE defense this season was not very good because it did not have a lot of talent and they had injuries as well. The Lions have some good defensive talent, they just need to add more pieces to make the defense stronger and faster especially the defensive line and linebackers. There is one thing that I want to say to Matt Patricia, and that is “Welcome To Detroit!”
